Details on CFL Bulbs
An energy saving bulb most popularly comes in two flavours: LED, Light Emmiting Diode or CFL, Compact Fluorescent Light bulb. They are designed to give the same amount of light compared to an general incandescent bulb and will save thousands of times its own weight of carbon dioxide being put into the air over its lifetime. This is one very good reason many people and businesses are replacing all the bulbs around their homes and offices with LEDs and CFLs.
A common misconception is that energy saving bulbs are thought of as dim, this originates from confusion over the wattage of the bulb. There are a variety of typical low wattage ratings for energy saving bulbs and to match the brightness of your old bulb, you need to know the equivalent wattage. When CFLs first became cheap and widely available they were not as bright and cheap as they are today. The same can be said about LEDs but now they are available in warm white and very bright.
An energy saving bulb equivalent to a 100w old incandescent is around 20w for CFL and 10w for LED. A common mistake is to buy an 11w CFL bulb which is equivalent to a 60w incandescent, suitable for medium-small rooms and table lamps. If you need to light up a large living room, kitchen, hallway or work area a 20w CFL light bulb or 10-12w LED bulb will be sufficient.
These are typical low wattage ratings and their equivalents:
10W LED = 22W CFL = 100W standard - excellent for lighting large rooms and work areas
6W LED = 11W CFL = 60W standard - great for living room lamps, bedrooms and other medium size rooms
4-5W LED = 9W CFL = 40W standard - good for multiple smaller lamps and illuminating smaller rooms
3W LED = 7W CFL = 35W standard - ideal for bedside lamps or very soft room lighting
